Africa-Press – Eswatini. Henrik Franklin, Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), extended his heartfelt condolences to all families affected by the recent flooding during the T-LEDS Inception Meeting held at the Mountain View Hotel.
Eswatini’s response has been marked by unity, with government agencies and humanitarian partners working closely to support affected communities. Preliminary assessments indicate that 1 645 people have been affected and 413 houses damaged, while 11 people have sustained injuries. Nine families, totaling around 40 individuals, have been temporarily displaced after their homes were waterlogged.
Despite these challenges, the collective efforts of the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA), the Baphalali Eswatini Red Cross Society (BERCS), and local communities have ensured that assistance continues to reach those in need.
While some roads and bridges have been affected, response teams remain focused on restoring access and delivering support. The impact on water supply and sanitation infrastructure is being addressed as part of ongoing recovery efforts. The education sector is also receiving attention, as several schools reported damage to classrooms and sanitation facilities.
As a precaution, the reopening of schools has been postponed from 20 January to 27 January 2026, allowing time for repairs and safety checks. In Mayiwane, the Minister of Education and Training, Hon. Owen Nxumalo, is currently inspecting construction progress at some of the schools affected by the recent storm in the Hhohho region, highlighting the government’s commitment to restoring safe learning environments.
Relief efforts are already underway, with 15 tents, 37 tarpaulins, and 12 food parcels distributed to affected households, providing immediate assistance and comfort to families. The collaborative response underscores the country’s resilience and ability to come together during difficult times.
As Eswatini moves forward, the continued support from partners and the dedication of communities reflect a shared commitment to recovery and rebuilding. Franklin’s condolences highlighted the spirit of togetherness that continues to guide the nation, and the positive momentum in relief efforts brings hope for a swift and strong recovery.
