Africa-Press – Eswatini. The National Maize Corporation (NMC) has implemented a 26% reduction in the selling price of maize supplied to her customers effective immediately.
The price of maize has been reduced from E7,081.00 per tonne to E5,175.00 per tonne, reflecting a decisive intervention aimed at safeguarding the affordability of staple foods for EmaSwati households. This strategic adjustment forms part of NMC’s ongoing commitment to ensuring food security, stabilising the maize market, and exercising responsible market leadership.
This significant decrease in the maize selling price is expected to drastically ease pressure within the maize value chain and translate into noticeable reductions in the prices of maize meal and other maize-based products on retail shelves. The adjustment is intended to deliver meaningful and tangible relief to consumers in the coming weeks.
Speaking on the development, Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Mavela Vilane, stated:
“This reduction is a decisive and deliberate intervention by NMC to ease pressure on households and reinforce stability within the maize market. We are confident that this adjustment will deliver meaningful relief to consumers and positively impact the affordability of staple foods. As NMC, we remain fully committed to protecting national food security and advancing grain sovereignty for the benefit of EmaSwati.”
To increase its reach and improve accessibility, NMC has also opened distribution centres across the country where members of the public can directly access maize packaged in 70kg and 50kg bags. The reduction in the per tonne maize price will correspondingly translate into reduced prices for these packaged bags, further extending relief to households and bulk buyers.
