King Reaffirms Commitment to Dignity and Condemns GBV

Africa-Press – Eswatini. His Majesty Mswati III has reaffirmed the Kingdom’s commitment to empowering all citizens and upholding the dignity and rights of every emaSwati.

Delivering the Speech from the Throne on Friday, 20 February 2026, during the State Opening of the Third Session of the 12th Parliament, the King expressed deep concern over the growing cases of domestic violence and abuse within homes across the country.

“The Kingdom reaffirms its commitment to empower all citizens and to uphold the dignity and rights of all emaSwati,” His Majesty declared.

He said it was deeply troubling that some homes, which ought to be places of protection and love, had become environments of fear and harm.

“As a country, we remain concerned about the growing reports of domestic violence and abuse in the home, where the man who ought to protect the family turns against it and abuses his wife and daughters,” said the King.

His Majesty noted that these social ills were often aggravated by alcohol and drug abuse, while in certain cases there were underlying psychological challenges that required urgent attention and intervention.

“These issues are worsened by alcohol and drug abuse, with some cases involving psychological challenges,” he stated.

The King urged emaSwati to take collective responsibility in addressing the problem, emphasising that extreme acts of violence rarely occur without warning.

“We urge every citizen to take responsibility and report these cases to law enforcement as soon as signs appear, because extreme cases do not happen on a whim; those close to the individuals are often aware of the situation,” His Majesty said.

He stressed that the fight against abuse and gender-based violence required a united national effort and a firm stance from all sectors of society.

“As a country, we must take a firm stance against abuse and gender-based violence. Every girl, woman, boy or man deserves to be treated with respect. Respect is reciprocal, and it starts with an individual respecting themselves,” he said.

His Majesty’s remarks underscored the Government’s continued resolve to protect the vulnerable, strengthen families and promote a culture of accountability, dignity and mutual respect throughout the Kingdom.
