Africa-Press – Eswatini. Eswatini Meteorological Service Director, Duduzile Nhlengethwa-Masina, has called for urgent and collective action to protect the environment, warning that climate responsibility must be embraced at every level of society during the Earth Hour commemoration held at House on Fire.
Speaking on 27 March 2026, Nhlengethwa-Masina told government officials, business leaders and community representatives that humanity must not degrade the very resources it depends on, stressing the need for stronger environmental stewardship.
“We must not urinate into the well we drink from,” she said, urging citizens to treat the environment as a shared resource requiring care and accountability.
The event, brought together stakeholders to reflect on climate change and encourage action to reduce emissions, improve energy efficiency and promote sustainable practices.
Nhlengethwa-Masina emphasized that commitments made at global and national levels must be implemented at community and individual level, calling for practical steps such as investing in renewable energy, reducing waste and protecting natural ecosystems including forests and wetlands.
She further highlighted growing climate challenges facing the country, including water scarcity, infrastructure vulnerability and pressures on health systems, urging coordinated efforts to build resilience.
The Director also called on stakeholders to support the implementation of Eswatini’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC 3.0), saying they are key to strengthening climate resilience and guiding sustainable development.
The Earth Hour commemoration formed part of a global campaign encouraging people to switch off lights for one hour in solidarity with environmental protection and climate action.
