Africa-Press – Eswatini. In a significant operation against drug trafficking, the Mliba Police arrested a 22-year-old man from Maphalaleni for possession of a substantial quantity of dagga on Monday morning.

According to reports from the Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS), the suspect was taken into custody around 08:00 hours on Saturday while in possession of a truckload of dagga weighing an impressive 147.7 kilograms.

Senior Superintendent Phindile Vilakati, the Police Information and Communication Officer, confirmed that the man was apprehended during a routine patrol at Sidvokodvo.

Authorities discovered that he did not possess the necessary licenses or permits to carry such a large quantity of the controlled substance.

“This operation highlights our ongoing commitment to combat drug-related crimes and ensure the safety of our communities,” stated Senior Superintendent Vilakati.

“Possessing such a significant amount of dagga poses a serious threat to societal well-being and legal order.”

The police have increased their surveillance and enforcement efforts following rising concerns over drug trafficking and its impact on community safety.

The arrest of the suspect comes as part of a broader initiative to curb drug abuse and distribution within the country.

Following his arrest, the suspect is set to appear before the Manzini Magistrate Court, where he will face charges about the illegal possession of dagga.

Law enforcement officials emphasize that possessing or trafficking in illegal substances can result in severe penalties under Eswatini law.

Some residents of Mliba in an interview with Eswatini Daily News (EDN) expressed mixed reactions to the arrest, with some praising the efforts of the police while others called for increased preventive measures to address the root causes of drug abuse in their communities.

“This is a good step in the right direction, but we need more focus on education and support systems to prevent young people from engaging in such activities,” said one community member.

The Royal Eswatini Police Service encourages anyone with information related to drug trafficking or other criminal activities to report it to local authorities.

Together, we can work towards creating a safer environment for everyone,” called Senior Superintendent Vilakati.

It is worth noting that as the investigation continues, authorities remain vigilant in their efforts to dismantle drug trafficking networks and reinforce the message that the illegal drug trade will not be tolerated in Eswatini.

“The community is urged to remain cooperative and proactive in its fight against illegal substances, supporting local law enforcement in safeguarding public health and safety,” Vilakati said.
