Africa-Press – Eswatini. Communities in Manzini united to raise awareness for childhood cancer at the “Big Walk for Young Warriors” 5KM walk on 14 February at The Rock in Edwaleni, drawing participants from across Eswatini.

The community walk brought together families, youth groups, corporate representatives, health professionals, and community members, all rallying behind children battling cancer. The event promoted health, fitness, and awareness, sending a strong message that early detection and community support are critical in the fight against childhood cancer.

Participants began the morning with an energizing aerobics session, followed by the 5KM walk around the Edwaleni area. The Salesian Brass Band provided live entertainment, lifting spirits and creating a celebratory atmosphere.

Key voices from the health and support sectors highlighted the urgency of early detection. Representatives from Imisebe Yekusa Cancer Support Group, Baylor College of Medicine Children’s Foundation Eswatini, Eswatini Childhood Cancer Foundation, and OncAura Eswatini reminded parents and guardians to seek medical attention for unexplained or persistent symptoms in children.

Manzini Lions Club President Sammy Msibi outlined the eight pillars guiding Lions Clubs International service work: vision, hunger, environment, childhood cancer, diabetes, youth, humanitarian efforts, and disaster relief. He emphasized that the club’s efforts under the childhood cancer pillar focus on supporting affected families and improving treatment facilities to ensure timely care.

“The Big Walk for Young Warriors is more than just a fitness event. It is a reminder that community action saves lives,” said Msibi. “Early detection gives children a fighting chance, and community support gives families hope.”

The event would not have been possible without the generous support of sponsors including Mbabane Motors, Galitos, EmerGCare, Rhodes Food Group, Lactalis, Logico, Elite Food Catering Supplies, Dixies International, Kellogg’s, Waterman, A.D Enterprises, Seaside Insurance Brokers, The Rock Edwaleni, Phoenix Insurance, and Mahindra. Partner organizations such as Autism Eswatini, Sicalisa Foundation, OncAura, Imisebe Cancer Support Group, Baylor Children Foundation, Eswatini Childhood Cancer Foundation, Ministry of Health, and the National Cancer Control Unit also played a vital role in ensuring the day’s success.

The Manzini Lions Club, which has been active in the community since 1981, plans to introduce a Mbabane Lions Club and is already preparing for next year’s walk, promising an even larger turnout.

The success of the event underscores the power of community solidarity in promoting health awareness and supporting vulnerable children. Through initiatives like these, childhood cancer awareness in Eswatini continues to gain momentum, showing that when communities unite, meaningful impact follows.
