Africa-Press – Eswatini. ACTOR Sithembiso ‘Sthera’ Kunene is making it in the South African film and entertainment industries.

The Eswatini-born actor was recently featured on South Africa’s famous series Gomora and Diep City.

Kunene said this was only the beginning as he recently started pursuing the career in the neighbouring country.

The actor said the chance to feature on these series came through his agency.

He said his agency contacted him about a scene in Gomora where the storyline is about a blesser (Mr Lebalo) who takes advantage of young girls and promises them opportunities because of his status and power.

He said he accepted the role immediately because he also felt the storyline was important and needed to be told. “Considering the times that we now live in, where the ‘blesser’ culture and young girls being taken advantage of all in the name of being promised a soft life is popular, I felt I had a role to tell in the story as well,” he said.

Kunene said he was very passionate about telling stories that impacted society. “So I took it in as much as it was not a big role. Bigger opportunities are still coming and we keep praying,” he shared.

He said considering that he had been part of the two big shows in South Africa, he believed that this would work in his brand’s favour going forward.

Kunene shared that these opportunities have made him a step closer to getting his breakthrough because of the experience he had gained through them.

“I have always had big plans for my career and they seem to grow daily because I see how many opportunities the industry in South Africa has to offer. All you have to do is go out there and chase all those opportunities that you think will work well for your brand,” he said.

He further shared that his plan was to execute all the ideas he had this year.

He said executing all the plans was important for his brand; one of which was to land a big role that would help cement his place in the industry.

Advertising space

Kunene added that he would also focus more on the commercial advertising space, so that he could be able to collaborate with brands that he resonated with. Kunene was also featured on an Amstel deal, which also came about from his modelling agency where he was featured on the upcoming advert as a background artist.

“It was really a great experience to be part of such a huge brand and getting to experience how things are done in a set of a big advert. I hope for more features with brands and being the lead, but that is also going to come in due time. Things are really working out though so it is promising to be very soon,” he said.

“I would also like to say that if you an upcoming actor in Eswatini, it is important to do your research and align yourself with people in the same craft as yours so that you can be able to get opportunities in a bigger scale or industry.

I would also advise people to get agencies that will help them get opportunities, but also be careful when looking for someone to represent them because they might just get exploited and not grow as an actor. Lastly, being educated in the craft that you love is very important,” he advised.
