Bushfire Supports Economic Ambition for E480,000 GDP

Africa-Press – Eswatini. The 2026 MTN Bushfire was presented as an example within government’s broader economic diversification agenda aimed at expanding growth beyond traditional sectors, Prime Minister Russell Mmiso Dlamini said during the official launch held on April 10 at House on Fire.

Represented by Commerce, Industry and Trade Minister Manqoba Khumalo, the Prime Minister said government is pursuing a more diversified and inclusive economy driven by tourism, culture, and the creative industries.

He highlighted the country’s economic growth from E1.4 billion in 1986 to E95.2 billion today, noting the need to further expand national income levels. “ The Kingdom of Eswatini has set an ambitious target: to raise our GDP per capita from E78 238 to E480 000. Achieving this requires a highly resilient, diversified, and inclusive economy,” he said.

He added that this goal requires reducing reliance on traditional revenue sources while expanding emerging sectors such as tourism, the creative economy, and cultural industries. Within this framework, Bushfire was referenced as an example of how cultural platforms can contribute to broader economic activity and national development.

The Prime Minister cited the festival’s E121.2 million contribution to the economy as evidence of the growing role of the creative sector in generating measurable economic returns. He noted that events of this scale stimulate activity across hospitality, transport, small businesses, and creative enterprises, while attracting international audiences.

“This is the hum of an economy that is diversifying, where culture, tourism, and infrastructure move in harmony,” he said. Government also highlighted ongoing infrastructure development, including plans for an International Convention Centre, aimed at improving the country’s capacity to host major events and attract investment.

Youth development initiatives linked to the festival, including the EU Bushfire Schools Festival and the Firefly Youth Talent Competition, were highlighted as pathways for young people to participate in the creative economy. The Minister acknowledged continued support from partners including MTN Eswatini and the European Union.

The launch concluded with government reaffirming its commitment to building a more diversified and inclusive economy anchored on innovation, culture, and long term development.
