CHURCH SESSION SPARKS EMOTION AS HMCS TACKLES GANGSTERISM

Africa-Press – Eswatini. Tears, reflection and renewed hope marked a powerful anti-Gangsterism session on March 29, 2026, as His Majesty’s Correctional Services (HMCS) engaged congregants at Divine Healing Ministries International during an Easter convention aimed at confronting rising concerns over youth involvement in crime.

The outreach, held in Manzini and attended by congregants from across Eswatini and South Africa, brought together young people and parents to address the causes, consequences and prevention of gangsterism. The session was led by HMCS Acting Public Relations Officer Baphelele Kunene, supported by officers Mfundo Dlamini, Luvuyo Dlamini and Sanele Simelane.

For many families, the message struck close to home. Parents were visibly moved as officers shared real-life experiences and the long-term impact of criminal involvement, highlighting how early intervention and community support can help redirect young people away from crime. Some congregants later sought spiritual guidance, reflecting the depth of concern within communities.

Gangsterism remains a growing concern in many communities, often linked to unemployment, peer pressure and lack of opportunities for young people. Law enforcement agencies have increasingly turned to community outreach programmes to raise awareness and prevent crime before it starts.

Kunene described the engagement as more than a presentation, calling it a collective call to action. He emphasised the importance of partnerships between institutions and faith-based organisations, noting that churches play a critical role in shaping values and guiding youth.

Divine Healing Ministries International Bishop Zanele Shongwe welcomed the initiative, describing it as timely and impactful. She said the presence of HMCS demonstrated a strong commitment to community engagement, adding that the message delivered brought awareness, healing and hope to both parents and young people.

The programme concluded with a prayer session, where congregants united in seeking guidance and protection for families, youth and security institutions, reinforcing the role of faith in addressing social challenges.

HMCS said the engagement forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen community partnerships and promote crime prevention beyond correctional facilities.
