Africa-Press – Eswatini. Civil servants are set for long-awaited relief after the Minister of Public Service, Mabulala Maseko, confirmed that the outstanding 85 per cent of the salary review will be paid in July 2026, with over E600 million already secured in the 2026/27 national budget.

The assurance was delivered during the Senate Portfolio Committee Budget Debate on March 24, 2026, where the Minister confirmed government’s commitment to improving the welfare of public servants and restoring confidence in the public sector.

The salary review, which marks the first in nine years, has already seen 15 per cent paid alongside back pay in October 2025 despite financial constraints. The full implementation is projected to cost about E1.6 billion, rising to E2.1 billion when including politicians and other beneficiaries.

Maseko explained that securing the E600 million ahead of time demonstrates government’s readiness to honour its commitments and support workers.

“This will help build trust between government and emaSwati,” he said, noting that improved remuneration will also assist in retaining skilled professionals, particularly in critical sectors such as health and education.

He highlighted that the review process was guided by independent consultants to ensure fairness, transparency, and credibility, with all civil servants included in the final structure.

The Minister also pointed to progress made in resolving labour concerns, including Phase 2 issues affecting security forces. Government committed E230 million to this phase, benefiting members of the Umbutfo Eswatini Defence Force, Royal Eswatini Police Service, and His Majesty’s Correctional Services.

“As I speak, the country is at peace. Where there are concerns or appeals, we are attending to them,” he said.

Maseko further commended the strong collaboration between government and labour organisations, describing it as key to achieving agreements that promote stability and harmony within the public service.

Beyond improving livelihoods, the full implementation of the salary review is expected to enhance service delivery and strengthen national unity.

Looking ahead, the Minister stressed that improved remuneration must be matched by improved performance across the civil service.

“With better remuneration, we expect a motivated and productive civil service that delivers quality services to emaSwati,” he said.

The July 2026 payment marks a major milestone in restoring trust, boosting morale, and building a more efficient and responsive public service.
