Africa-Press – Eswatini. While Eswatini needs the establishment of small businesses to accelerate economic growth, the recent uproar over a coffin manufacturing business at Nkoyoyo underscores the importance of conducting an environmental impact assessment (EIA) and mitigation measures before the launch of a business project. Naturally, the sight of a coffin is bound to evoke emotions related to sadness, which is why it is important to be considerate to religious, spiritual and personal beliefs of the community. However, it is also important for the community to report their complaints through the relevant structures rather than vandalising doors. The involvement of police is inevitable when the situation has escalated to persecution and violence. There is a need for relevant authorities to intervene before such situations escalate into mob violence.
Indlondlo Yamanzi
THE ecosystem is well-known for its natural ability to cleanse itself. Flowing water can clean itself through physical, chemical and biological processes such as dilution, sedimentation, filtering and aeration, which is why the adverse effects of seeing the South African traditional healer conduct rituals in a dam that supplies a large population of people is more psychological and spiritual rather than physical. However, regardless of the fact that the dam is huge and contamination may be impossible due to additional purification measures applied by the Eswatini Water Services Corporation, water must be respected. Traditional healers are associated with spirits and mysterious rituals. It is advisable for anyone using a public source of water for purposes other than consumption to consult the relevant authorities to avoid public anger.
E4bn spent, no guidelines
IT is disturbing that an estimated over E4 billion has been disbursed in the past 10 years for social grants that have no guidelines. It is the absence of such guidelines that breeds ghost beneficiaries and renders the grants vulnerable to fraudsters and there is sufficient evidence of social grants being unlawfully collected by proxies on behalf of deceased beneficiaries.
A country like Eswatini, which is still struggling in service delivery cannot afford to spend the taxpayers’ money without adequate guidelines in place. More disturbing is that the absence of the guidelines makes it difficult for the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to initiate prosecutions once cases of fraud have been reported. It is unfortunate that, according to Principal Secretary in the DPM’s Office Melusi Masuku, the guidelines were developed by are yet to be tabled in Parliament.
MTN Bushfire
AS the MTN Bushfire ends, some revellers are already talking about saving for the next edition. Prime Minister Russell Dlamini has lauded the festival for putting the kingdom on a global scale. Indeed it is a unique event that has drawn people from all over the world, pumping in the money through various sectors of the economy and fostered critical information exchange with visitors from other countries. It is also quite interesting to see emaSwati supporting and enjoying themselves through this homegrown initiative.
