Africa-Press – Eswatini. Eswatini Correctional Services Staff Association (ECOSSA) has condemned the brutal attacks on protesters by Wardens at the Matsapha Maximum Prison on Tuesday.
This comes after the prison wardens shot members of the Swaziland Liberation Movement (SWALIMO) who had come to visit incarcerated pro-democracy MP Mthandeni Dube.
In a statement released on Wednesday , Mduduzi Simelane, the ECOSSA Secretary General said they strongly stood against any form of brutality and further disassociated their organisation from such cowardice as shown by the warders on Tuesday.
\”As ECOSSA we firmly stand against any form of brutality and further disassociate our organisation from such cowardice and barbaric behaviour, however not all Correctional Officers are members of ECOSSA\”,reads the statement in part.
Phindile Lomakhosini Dlamini, the Commissioner General of the Correctional Services had not responded to our questionnaire at the time of compiling this report.
Wandile Dludlu, the Secretary General of the People’s United Democratic Movement(PUDEMO) said they welcomed everyone who championed human rights.
“We side with everyone who champions human rights and this staff association is spot on. We encourage all Correctional Officers to join this association so they can embrace and respect human rights. We encourage the police to also form and strengthen theirs”, said the PUDEMO Secretary General.
