Africa-Press – Eswatini. Small business owners are breaking into international markets while new factories rise across the country, as government intensifies efforts to position Eswatini as a competitive player in global trade.

Minister of Commerce, Industry and Trade Mancoba Khumalo outlined the developments during the Senate Portfolio Committee Budget Debate, where he also tabled a proposed budget of E288 194 711 for the 2026 financial year. Of this, E190 759 711 is earmarked for recurrent expenditure, while E97 435 000 is allocated for capital projects.

Khumalo revealed that local entrepreneurs have already begun showcasing their products abroad, with delegations travelling to India and Botswana to expand market access. He further noted that the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) has been extended to 31 December 2026, securing continued trade relations with the United States.

The minister highlighted that as a ministry, they are committed to maintaining strong trade ties with America while ensuring Eswatini is well represented in regional trade blocs.

At the centre of the ministry’s strategy is industrialisation, with the manufacturing sector now contributing 29 percent to the country’s Gross Domestic Product. Several factories in Hlathikhulu, Ndzevane and Gwamile are already operational, creating jobs and enabling workers to live within their communities instead of relocating.

Additional projects are underway, with factories in Ngwenya expected to employ between 700 and 1 000 people, while another in Piggs Peak is projected to create 700 jobs upon completion later this financial year.

The minister also highlighted the success of the Eswatini Investment Conference, which secured commitments for new projects expected to further boost employment opportunities.

Support for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) remains a priority, with the Small Enterprises Development Company (SEDCO) providing targeted assistance. Innovation hubs in Piggs Peak and Macetjeni have also been established to support digital businesses, while a one-stop shop under the Registrar of Companies is streamlining business registration processes.

Meanwhile, the department of Intellectual Property and ICT is empowering creatives by ensuring they can monetise their work and understand their rights.

Khumalo said these combined efforts are aimed at strengthening Eswatini’s economic resilience and ensuring local products gain recognition on the global stage.
