Africa-Press – Eswatini. Eswatini Electricity Company (EEC) has assured customers that restoration efforts are progressing steadily following severe thunderstorms and lightning that damaged electricity infrastructure across several parts of the country on Saturday, December 27, 2025.

The storms, accompanied by heavy rainfall and lightning, caused multiple network faults, particularly in the northern regions of Eswatini. As a result, power interruptions were experienced in a number of communities. EEC confirmed that more than 2 000 faults were reported countrywide, with technical teams already deployed to attend to the outages.

Among the most affected depots were Stonehenge, which recorded 678 faults, Matsapha with 277, Malkerns with 263, Pigg’s Peak with 242, Nhlangano with 231, Manzini with 165, and Mankayane with 156 faults. According to the utility, these figures reflect the extent of lightning-related damage to the distribution network.

EEC spokespersons said engineers and technicians are on the ground assessing damage and carrying out repairs, with priority given to areas that experienced the highest number of outages. Regions with fewer faults are being restored through standard operational procedures. Restoration is being done progressively and remains dependent on weather conditions and the level of damage to infrastructure.

The p”wer utility acknowledged that access to some affected areas has been challenging due to slippery and waterlogged roads, which may cause delays in response times. Despite these challenges, EEC emphasised that teams are working around the clock to restore electricity safely and efficiently.

In addition, EEC issued an urgent public safety appeal, urging members of the public to stay away from fallen power lines or damaged electrical equipment. Residents were reminded to always assume that fallen lines are live and extremely dangerous and to report such incidents immediately.

Customers without electricity are encouraged to report outages through EEC’s self-service platform (*8888#), the toll-free call centre on 800 9000, cellphone line 2508 3333, email, or official social media platforms.

EEC apologised for the inconvenience caused by the outages and thanked customers for their patience and cooperation, assuring the nation that every effort is being made to restore power as quickly and safely as possible.
