EEC WARNS PUBLIC AGAINST ELECTRICITY DISCONNECTION SCAM

Africa-Press – Eswatini. The Eswatini Electricity Company (EEC) has issued a public alert warning customers and members of the public about a scam involving fraudsters impersonating EEC employees and demanding mobile money payments under false pretences.

In a statement released on Saturday January 3, 2025 EEC said it has received reports of individuals calling customers while posing as company officials, falsely identifying themselves as “Mr Shabangu.” The callers allegedly inform customers that their electricity supply is about to be disconnected due to illegal connections or outstanding debt. Victims are then instructed to urgently make mobile money payments to a number said to belong to one Mr Mkhaliphi.

EEC has strongly distanced itself from these fraudulent activities, stressing that the calls do not originate from the utility company.

“The Eswatini Electricity Company does not, under any circumstances, demand payments via mobile money through personal phone numbers,” the company said. “EEC will also never call customers to threaten immediate disconnection and request payment over the phone.”

The power utility further clarified that all matters relating to illegal electricity connections or debt recovery are handled through a formal and documented process. Customers are officially notified, and any required payments are made strictly at authorised EEC service centres. Upon payment, customers are always issued with an official receipt as proof of transaction.

EEC urged the public to remain vigilant and to exercise caution when receiving unsolicited calls demanding payment. Customers are advised to verify all payment requests directly with EEC before taking any action and to avoid making payments without proper confirmation.

The company has also called on members of the public to report any suspected scam incidents immediately to assist in protecting others from falling victim to fraud.

EEC reiterated its commitment to safeguarding customers and encouraged the public to share the warning widely.

“Staying alert and informed is key to preventing fraud,” the statement said. “Customers are urged to protect themselves and their communities by reporting all suspicious activity.”

The utility appealed for continued cooperation as it works with relevant authorities to address the scam and ensure the safety of its customers.
