Africa-Press – Eswatini. The Eswatini Energy Regulatory Authority (ESERA) is inviting the public to participate in nationwide consultations regarding the Eswatini Electricity Company’s (EEC) proposed Standardised Electricity Connection Charges.
These proposed charges aim to introduce a structured and transparent pricing model based on factors such as distance, conductor type, and connection type. The charges apply specifically to standardised connections, which refer to electricity connections within 350 metres of an existing network and which do not require transformer installation or high-voltage line construction.
Under the proposal, customers will be grouped into defined distance bands—for example, 0–50m, 50–100m, up to 350m—with clear and consistent pricing for each band. Non-standardised connections (those beyond 350m) will continue to be costed individually until standardised charges are developed for them as well.
This initiative is a response to public concerns over inconsistent and non-transparent electricity connection quotations. To address these issues, ESERA developed the Connection Charge Guidelines, providing a regulatory framework that promotes uniformity, predictability, and fairness in electricity connection costs.
“ESERA developed the Connection Charge Guidelines to address long-standing public concerns about fairness in connection costs,” said Teclar Maphosa, ESERA’s Communications and Stakeholder Manager. “Following that, EEC submitted an application proposing the actual standardised charges that would be applied under those guidelines. We are now inviting the public to review and comment on this application before ESERA makes a final decision.”
These consultations are part of ESERA’s broader commitment to transparency, fairness, and inclusive decision-making in the energy sector.
“Through these consultations, ESERA seeks to ensure that every stakeholder has the opportunity to understand the proposal and share their views,” Maphosa added. “Public participation is a vital part of ensuring transparency and fairness in how electricity connection charges are approved and implemented.”
