Africa-Press – Eswatini. Prime Minister Russell Mmiso Dlamini and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Senator Pholile Shakantu met with Patricia Llombart Cussac, Managing Director for Africa at the European External Action Service (EEAS).

She was accompanied by the European Union Ambassador to Eswatini, Karsten Mecklenburg.

The meeting focused on areas where Eswatini and the European Union can work together to support the country’s development priorities and create opportunities for economic growth.

According to information released following the engagements, discussions centred on the long-standing relationship between Eswatini and the European Union and how the partnership can continue to contribute to the country’s development agenda.

The talks also extended to key economic sectors. Ms. Llombart Cussac held separate meetings with Minister of Commerce, Industry and Trade Manqoba Khumalo and Minister of Information, Communications and Technology Savannah Maziya.

During discussions on trade and industry, both sides explored ways to increase Eswatini’s access to European markets through existing trade arrangements. The conversations also looked at opportunities to attract more European investment into sectors considered important for economic growth and job creation.

Particular attention was given to supporting local industries and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), which play an important role in the country’s economy. Discussions included measures that could help local businesses improve product standards, meet international requirements and compete more effectively in export markets.

The European Union also shared information on various programmes and initiatives currently being implemented in Eswatini. These initiatives are designed to support economic development, improve competitiveness and create opportunities for businesses and communities.

Technology and digital development formed another important part of the discussions. During the meeting with Minister Savannah Maziya, attention turned to Eswatini’s efforts to modernise public services and expand access to digital technologies.

Areas discussed included improving digital infrastructure, expanding internet connectivity and supporting the development of electronic government services. The two sides also exchanged views on digital public services and the role technology can play in improving service delivery for citizens.

Cybersecurity was identified as another area where cooperation could be beneficial. As more services move online, governments around the world are placing greater emphasis on protecting digital systems and ensuring the safe use of technology.

The discussions also considered how European Union programmes could support some of the objectives contained in Eswatini’s digital transformation plans. This includes initiatives aimed at improving connectivity and helping countries make greater use of digital tools in both the public and private sectors.

The meetings highlighted the wide range of areas in which Eswatini and the European Union continue to work together. Beyond diplomatic relations, cooperation now covers trade, investment, technology, economic development and public service delivery.

For Eswatini, partnerships of this nature provide opportunities to access new markets, attract investment and support national development efforts. For the European Union, the engagements provide an opportunity to continue working with Eswatini on programmes that promote economic progress and sustainable development.

The discussions concluded with both sides expressing their interest in maintaining regular engagement and exploring practical areas of cooperation that can contribute to growth, innovation and improved opportunities for the people of Eswatini.
