Africa-Press – Eswatini. His Royal Highness Prince Lonkhokhela, Minister of Natural Resources and Energy, represented Eswatini at the 69th Regular Session of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference, held from September 15to 19, 2025 in Vienna.
As one of the high-ranking delegates, the Minister delivered a key address as the second speaker, following Iran’s representative and preceding the European Union delegation. His speech highlighted Eswatini’s commitment to harnessing nuclear science and technology for sustainable development.
Minister Lonkhokhela expressed gratitude to the IAEA for supporting critical national initiatives in cancer treatment, water resource management, pest control, and livestock health. Eswatini also underscored its active participation in the IAEA’s Water Availability Enhancement (IWAVE) program and the development of a national Hydrological Gap Plan.
A major announcement from the session was the completion of preliminary designs for Eswatini’s first public Radiotherapy Facility at Manzini Government Hospital. With an estimated cost of €10 million, the facility aims to reduce the country’s high cancer mortality rate and reliance on external treatment funded through the Phalala Fund. The Government has committed initial resources and called on international partners to support the initiative.
Minister Lonkhokhela’s participation reinforces Eswatini’s growing role in international nuclear technology discussions, advancing healthcare, water management, and agricultural productivity.
