Africa-Press – Eswatini. The Kingdom of Eswatini has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting refugees and promoting their integration into local communities as the world commemorates World Refugee Day 2026.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government highlighted the country’s continued efforts to provide safety, dignity and opportunities for refugees, asylum seekers, stateless persons and others in need of international protection.
This year’s World Refugee Day is being observed under the theme “Solidarity with Refugees”, coinciding with the 75th anniversary of the 1951 United Nations Refugee Convention. The commemoration serves as a reminder of the importance of creating inclusive societies where displaced people can rebuild their lives and contribute positively to their host communities.
Eswatini has demonstrated its dedication to refugee welfare through its accession to key international agreements, including the 1951 Refugee Convention, the 1967 Protocol and the 1969 Organisation of African Unity Convention on refugee protection. These commitments have been incorporated into national legislation through the Refugees Act of 2017, providing a strong framework for refugee protection and management.
The Ministry noted that refugee inclusion extends beyond providing shelter. It involves ensuring access to schools, healthcare services, workplaces and community life. By embracing inclusive policies, refugees are given opportunities to become productive members of society while contributing to national development.
Through the Department of Refugees, Government has continued to strengthen the country’s asylum system, ensuring fair and efficient processing of applications. Over the past year, the department registered 272 asylum applications, issued 398 refugee convention passports, renewed 225 refugee statuses and granted 35 new refugee statuses.
The Ministry also praised the support of local communities, development partners and humanitarian organisations that continue to assist refugees across the country. Special recognition was given to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), World Vision, diplomatic missions, private sector partners and communities surrounding refugee settlements for their ongoing contributions.
Government further highlighted initiatives aimed at promoting economic inclusion, including efforts to revitalise refugee settlements and support agricultural projects. These programmes are helping refugees become self-reliant while creating economic opportunities that benefit both refugees and host communities.
As Eswatini joins the global community in marking World Refugee Day, the message remains clear: solidarity, inclusion and shared responsibility are essential in building stronger, more resilient communities where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
