A group of teachers from Eswatini has made history at the 2025 Comrades Marathon in South Africa, showcasing not only their athletic prowess but also the power of perseverance and national pride. These dedicated educators proved that excellence knows no boundaries whether in the classroom or on the road.
Leading the team was Themba Vilakati, who delivered an extraordinary performance, completing the ultramarathon in just 7 hours, 13 minutes, and 47 seconds which us an impressive pace of 4:50 minutes per kilometer. His finish placed him among the top amateur runners, underscoring his elite fitness and disciplined preparation.
Other standout performances included Bheki Mpendulo Matse (9:34:40, 6:24 min/km), Senzo Gamedze (9:49:26), Madoda Nkambule (9:50:42), and Phasika Dlamini (9:20:45, 6:14 min/km), with Siza Dlamini narrowly missing the 10-hour mark with a time of 10:07:16.
Also making Eswatini proud were Phesheya Vilakati, who clocked in at 10:38:03 (7:06 min/km), Sizwe Ndzinisa at 10:55:57 (7:18 min/km), Ncamiso Thwala at 11:14:06 (7:30 min/km), Nonsikelelo Dlamini at 11:27:14 (7:39 min/km), Saneliso Mkhatshwa at 11:50:01 (7:54 min/km), and Nhlanhla Shongwe, who finished at 12:42:36 with a steady pace of 8:29 min/km. All completed the race with unofficial times, overcoming grueling terrain and distance with remarkable resilience.
For these teacher-athletes, the Comrades Marathon was more than a personal challenge, it was a testament to their commitment, strength, and community spirit. Their achievements are being celebrated across Eswatini, where students and supporters have flooded social media with messages of admiration.
