Africa-Press – Eswatini. Eswatini’s roads are set to enjoy a longer lifespan, thanks to a visionary plan announced by the Ministry of Public Works and Transport to move heavy freight transportation from roads to railways.
Speaking in an interview with Forbes Magazine, Minister of Public Works and Transport, Chief Ndlaluhlaza Ndwandwe, revealed that the initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance the quality and sustainability of the country’s infrastructure. “We are working towards preserving our road network and ensuring that users experience high-quality roads for many more years,” the Minister said.
Minister Ndwandwe shared that a structured plan is in place to upgrade the road network, with a goal to tar all major roads across Eswatini. While progress depends on resource availability, he emphasized that steady strides are being made. Exciting developments are already on the horizon, including the official opening of a newly constructed road in the southern region by His Majesty and the launch of a 100-kilometre road project in the next financial year.
Looking northwards, the Minister announced plans to develop a major road near Pigg’s Peak, close to the South African border. These initiatives aim to bolster national connectivity while protecting the existing infrastructure by shifting heavy loads to the railway system.
In a move to enhance sustainability, the ministry has established a dedicated Road Authority, tasked with managing the country’s road infrastructure. The authority will be supported by a Road Fund, drawing revenues from tolls, vehicle registrations, and licence renewals. “Having a predictable funding source allows us to maintain and plan proactively for the long term,” Ndwandwe explained.
Technology is also playing a pivotal role in revolutionizing Eswatini’s transport system. Collaborating with the Royal Science and Technology Park, the ministry is developing a data-driven system for public transport route allocation. This scientific approach will optimize operations, prevent route overcrowding, and improve profitability for minibus and bus operators.
Further enhancing road safety and efficiency, the ministry is exploring smart traffic management solutions, including strategically positioned surveillance cameras aimed at easing congestion, enhancing security, and reducing accidents.
On the railways, Minister Ndwandwe highlighted the strengthening of security measures, particularly the real-time tracking of high-value goods to guarantee safe and efficient transit.
“Infrastructure forms the backbone of economic growth,” Ndwandwe concluded. “Our commitment is to create a transport network that seamlessly connects our people and businesses, boosting trade, investment, and prosperity across Eswatini and beyond.”
