Africa-Press – Eswatini. The immediate focus for Eswatini to take advantage of preferential access to the African market under the AfCFTA, entails maximising the sectors where the country currently possesses competitive strength.

Acting Chief, Sub-regional Initiatives Section Economic Commission of Africa, Sub-regional Office for Southern Africa Dr. Mzwanele Mfunwa noted that Eswatini possesses competitive strength in agro-processing (beef, food processing, and agricultural value chains including sugar) as well as light manufacturing (targeting leather, clothing and textiles). Mfunwa said the country through this strategy will also be putting the building blocks that would also allow for increased volumes and diversity of exports (in automotive and pharmaceuticals).

Meanwhile, the Acting Minister of Commerce, Industry and Trade, Dr Tambo Gina, said as a way of increasing the country’s trade and investment opportunities under the AfCFTA, Eswatini has seen it prudent to develop a national Implementation Strategy and Action Plan, which charts a pathway for the business community to reap the benefits of the agreement. Gina said the strategy identifies priority export products and services with high export potential, key value chains, value-addition and trade opportunities, as well as constraints, measures and capacities required for the country to take full advantage of the national, bilateral, regional and global markets within the context of the AfCFTA.
