Africa-Press – Eswatini. Communities from Mhlume and Lomahasha constituencies gathered today March, 25, 2026 to mark the successful conclusion of a 12-month Disaster Management and Resilience project implemented by the Eswatini Red Cross Society, which has strengthened food security and livelihoods for over 15 000 people across five chiefdoms.
The initiative, carried out through the Siteki Branch, targeted drought-affected areas with both immediate relief and long-term sustainability interventions. The programme in Mafucula, Mnyangombili and Maphiveni in Mhlume, as well as Lomahasha and Shewula, focused on supporting vulnerable households facing recurring drought challenges.
Through a combination of cash assistance, livestock distribution, poultry farming and fruit tree planting, the project aimed to build resilience while improving household income and nutrition. A total of 1 220 households directly benefited from the interventions, while at community level, 10 water points were protected through fencing to ensure safe and sustainable access to water.
The project was implemented by Baphalali Eswatini Red Cross Society in partnership with the British Red Cross, highlighting strong international collaboration in addressing climate-related challenges. A project coordinator highlighted that the initiative has made a tangible difference in people’s lives, noting that communities have moved from vulnerability towards greater stability through the support provided.
Community members also shared their appreciation, noting improvements in food availability and household wellbeing. “Before this programme, it was difficult to provide for our families, but now we have livestock and crops that help us survive even during dry periods,” said one beneficiary.
Stakeholders further emphasised that beyond food security, the project promoted discipline, self-reliance and sustainable agricultural practices, equipping communities with knowledge to better respond to future climate shocks.
As the programme concludes, communities have been encouraged to continue building on the progress achieved. Organisers expressed confidence that the foundations laid through the initiative will ensure long-term resilience and improved livelihoods for years to come.
