Africa-Press – Eswatini. The Ministry of Public Works and Transport has moved quickly to address the road damage that recently occurred on the route between Maguga Dam and KaNcesi, reassuring road users that restoration works are already underway.
Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, Thulani Mkhaliphi, confirmed that engineers and technical teams were promptly dispatched to the affected area after a hole formed in the middle of the road. Speaking to Eswatini TV, Mkhaliphi said the Ministry responded without delay to ensure the safety of motorists and pedestrians.
He explained that construction of a temporary detour is currently in progress to allow traffic to pass safely around the damaged section. The detour is expected to significantly ease movement for road users while permanent repair works are being prepared.
Mkhaliphi further stated that engineers have already assessed the cause of the road failure and have put in place a clear plan to address it. The affected area has been cordoned off as a safety precaution, with detour construction scheduled to commence on Monday, January 5, 2026. Full repair works are expected to begin during the course of the week.
He added that the restoration project will be carried out internally by the Ministry, demonstrating Government’s technical capacity and commitment to maintaining critical infrastructure. While the repairs are complex and may take between two and three months to complete, Mkhaliphi assured the public that the work will be carried out thoroughly to ensure long-term durability of the road.
The road damage has occurred at a time when schools are preparing to reopen, raising concerns among parents and communities who rely on the route for access to schools and essential services. However, Government’s swift intervention has been welcomed as a positive step towards minimising disruption.
The Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS) has also played a supportive role by urging motorists to drive with caution when approaching the affected area. Pedestrians have likewise been advised to remain vigilant and follow safety guidance while the works are ongoing.
Overall, the prompt response by the Ministry of Public Works and Transport reflects Government’s commitment to public safety and infrastructure resilience, even under challenging conditions caused by heavy rains and road wear.
