Africa-Press – Eswatini. “There is no need to panic,” reassured Acting Government Spokesperson Thabile Mdluli, in response to growing public concern over the arrival of five third-party inmates recently deported to Eswatini by the United States Government.
The matter has drawn widespread attention and speculation, with many citizens taking to social media and public platforms to seek clarity and express fears over national security. Addressing these concerns, Mdluli confirmed that the deportees are not Emaswati citizens, but were transferred under a legally sanctioned international cooperation agreement involving multiple nations, including Eswatini.
“These individuals are not threats to national security,” Mdluli emphasized. “Their arrival is being handled with the highest levels of caution and in line with international protocols. We wish to assure the nation that all relevant government departments, including security agencies, are fully briefed and actively monitoring the situation.”
Understanding the Context
The deportees are classified as “third-party inmates,” meaning they were not originally from the US but were held in American detention facilities after being apprehended on foreign soil due to various international law enforcement actions. Their return to Africa forms part of a broader repatriation and rehabilitation programme managed in coordination with partner states.
Although Eswatini is not their country of origin, the Kingdom agreed, on humanitarian grounds and through diplomatic engagement, to temporarily host the individuals until a more permanent solution is found.
