Africa-Press – Eswatini. The Eswatini Government has allocated E40 million to combat the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease. This announcement was made by Prime Minister Russell Mmiso Dlamini following a meeting with Victor Mahlalela, the Chief Executive Officer of the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA).
Details of the Outbreak

The outbreak is currently affecting the southern region of Shiselweni, with confirmed cases reported in at least nine diptanks. To mitigate the spread of the disease, the NDMA has set up four checkpoints in various locations throughout the Shiselweni region. These measures aim to prevent the disease from reaching other parts of the country.

Emergency Response Plan

The meeting between the Prime Minister and the NDMA CEO focused on discussing the emergency response plan for this outbreak. The allocation of funds is part of a broader strategy to control and manage the situation effectively.

Declaration of the Outbreak

The outbreak was officially declared on May 22, 2025, by the Ministry of Agriculture. At that time, Bongani Nzima, the Minister of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs, acted as the Minister of Agriculture while the incumbent, Mandla Tshawuka, was attending the Brazil-Africa Summit on food security in Brazil.

This proactive approach by the government highlights the urgency of addressing the foot-and-mouth disease to protect livestock and ensure food security in Eswatini.
