Africa-Press – Eswatini. Three determined residents of Mahlangatja Inkhundla have emerged victorious in the Umbutfo Eswatini Defence Force (UEDF) recruitment race, securing places in the next stage of the national army selection process.
The race, staged on Saturday, 27 September 2025, at Mahlangatja Inkhundla Centre, attracted hundreds of hopefuls, all vying for a coveted chance to don the uniform and serve the nation. Competitors were put through a gruelling two-fold 3.2-kilometre sprint, designed to push both speed and endurance to the limit.
The Winners
In the men’s division, Ndumiso Dlamini — a rising footballer who plays fullback for Mbabane Highlanders — powered past the field to clinch first place. Close behind was Lwazi Tsela, who secured second spot and qualification.
The women’s category delivered a standout performance from Tandzile Dlamini, who stunned spectators with her pace and stamina to take the top prize.
Path to the Army
According to UEDF recruitment guidelines, only the top two male runners and the leading female finisher earn passage to the next phase. This includes vetting, medical examinations and further assessments to determine their suitability for enlistment.
In a departure from previous years, this year’s Mangcongco recruitment did not feature extra drills or obstacle tests beyond the run — making the race itself the sole determinant of success.
A Race of Hope
For the hundreds who braved the starting line, the Mahlangatja race was more than a contest of endurance. It represented hope in the face of unemployment and uncertainty, a chance at stability and national pride.
Though only three progressed, their victory carries the weight of their families’ and community’s aspirations. As the UEDF continues its nationwide recruitment drive, Mahlangatja now stands as another vivid example of youth resilience, determination and dreams of service to the nation.
