Africa-Press – Eswatini. Hundreds of nominated candidates were queued outside the Nhlangano Eswatini Revenue Service (ERS) offices yesterday for their tax clearances.
It is worth noting that part of the requirements for qualification as a nominee is that the candidate should have paid all taxes or made an arrangement satisfactory to the commissioner of taxes. It was gathered that some of the nominees had queued from Sunday night, as some had blankets with them.
Clearance
Some of the candidates had no clearance issues as they were paying their taxes in full, while others did not. It was a busy environment as others were making calls, while some were complaining about slow service in the offices. A police officer was eventually called to bring order at the entrance as there seemed to be disorder. Some of the candidates were questioned why they had to wait until the nominations to clear their taxes, and they shared that they did not know that they would be nominated. Some stated that they never thought it was a process, hence they assumed it would be done easily after the nominations.
It was further noted that most of the nominees had challenges, as the clearances were sent via email and they constantly requested assistance from the youth in the same queues. “We have to do it regardless, we have been sent by the people to represent them,” said one woman candidate. It was said that they were given 48 hours by their presiding officers to sort out their paperwork for them to finish the nomination registration. In fact, it was said that they were only going to take pictures after they had provided all the necessary documents. The taking of pictures is the last part of the registration, wherein, the whole information is handed back to returning officers.
