INCWALA DAY DECLARED PUBLIC HOLIDAY ON TUESDAY

Africa-Press – Eswatini. The Minister of Home Affairs, Her Royal Highness Princess Lindiwe, has announced that Tuesday, 6 January 2026, will be observed as a public holiday in honour of Incwala Day.

The announcement was made on Saturday, January 3, 2026 at Ngabezweni Royal Residence. It was made in recognition of the cultural and national significance of Incwala, one of the Kingdom’s most important traditional ceremonies. Incwala symbolises renewal, unity and the reaffirmation of the nation’s values under the leadership of His Majesty King Mswati III.

Government ministries, businesses and institutions will therefore suspend normal operations on the day, except for essential services. Members of the public were urged to plan accordingly and to conduct themselves with respect for tradition and public order during the holiday.

The announcement has been welcomed by many citizens, who view the public holiday as an important gesture that acknowledges the enduring role of culture and tradition in national life.

Incwala Day is observed following key preparatory rituals, including the cutting and presentation of the sacred Lusekwane shrub. The holiday underscores the unity of the nation as it gathers, in spirit and practice, to honour this significant cultural event.
