KING CALLS FOR PEACEFUL MALAWI ELECTIONS

Africa-Press – Eswatini. As Malawi prepares to cast its ballots in tomorrow’s highly anticipated general elections, His Majesty King Mswati III of the Kingdom of Eswatini—also the incoming Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation, has delivered a strong message of unity, peace, and democracy to the people of Malawi and the broader Southern African region.

In his statement on the eve of the September 16 elections, which will determine Malawi’s next President, Members of Parliament, and Councillors, His Majesty reaffirmed the Southern African Development Community’s (SADC) commitment to supporting credible and transparent democratic processes across the region.

“I call upon all Malawians who are eligible to vote to do so in their large numbers, exercising their democratic right and contributing to the development and prosperity of their country,” the King urged.

SADC’s Mission of Support

At Malawi’s invitation, SADC has deployed its Electoral Observation Mission (SEOM) under the leadership of Honourable Themba Masuku, former Deputy Prime Minister of Eswatini. The mission will monitor the pre-election environment, polling day activities, and post-election processes in line with the revised SADC Principles and Guidelines Governing Democratic Elections (2021).

These principles, adopted by all SADC Member States, promote free, fair, transparent, and peaceful elections as cornerstones of democracy and good governance.

Confidence in Malawi’s Democratic Tradition

His Majesty praised Malawi’s “long-standing tradition of peace and stability,” expressing confidence that the country will once again uphold its reputation as a beacon of democracy in the region. He encouraged political leaders and their supporters to respect the will of the people and to resolve any disputes responsibly through legal channels.

“May these elections strengthen Malawi’s democracy, foster national unity and chart the path for Malawi’s prosperity,” His Majesty concluded.

A Regional Moment of Solidarity

The upcoming elections in Malawi are not only a national milestone but also a regional test of unity and democratic resilience. Through His Majesty’s message, SADC has signaled its readiness to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Malawi, ensuring that peace and fairness prevail during this crucial democratic exercise.
