Africa-Press – Eswatini. Capital city giants Mbabane Highlanders fan Maswazi Dlamini will face the music after allegedly assaulting FIFA accredited referee Petros Mbingo when Highlanders supporters invaded the Mavuso Sports Centre pitch following their 2-1 defeat to Manzini Sea Birds two weeks ago.
Despite Highlanders being fined E70 000 by the Eswatini Football Association (EFA) Disciplinary Committee for three counts which include supporters who threatened to assault the assistant referee, Mbingo has opened a separate assault case against Maswazi.
Unpleasant act
According to a source close to the matter, the match official pressed charges against the black bull supporter as he believes the law should take its course for such an unpleasing act.
“The matter was reported to police by the assistant referee after he allegedly assaulted by the fan,” the source said.
The ‘Black Bull ‘supporters bayed for the referee’s blood Mbongeni Shongwe after what they termed a controversial winning goal for Sea Birds scored by Sandumuzi Zwane.
Assault
Royal Eswatini Police Services (REPS) Public Information and Communications Officer (PICO) Superintendent Phindile Vilakati confirmed that an assault case was opened by a referee against a fan.
“Yes we have an assault case that was opened by a referee against a fan at Manzini Police Station,” confirmed Vilakati.
Mbabane Highlanders Public Relations Officer Kenneth Dlamini said nothing formal had reached his office pertaining the matter but he would communicate once he receives something.
Premier League of Eswatini Chief Executive Officer Kenneth Makhanya could not be drawn for comment as he did not respond to text messages sent to him.
