Africa-Press – Eswatini. Maxwell Nkambule, the lawyer representing freedom fighters who stand accused of arson attacks and killing State police officers, survived an assassination attempt on Wednesday afternoon.
This comes a few months after Sicelo Mngomezulu, the lawyer representing incarcerated pro-democracy Members of Parliament(MPs) Bacede Mabuza and Mthandeni Dube was banned from entering eSwatini.
It has been disclosed that lawyer Maxwell Nkambule was allegedly followed by a white corolla similar to that of Government, when he was along the Big Bend-Siteki road, a passenger suddenly opened fire.
The lawyer said the car first pretended as if it was overtaking him before the shooting.
“I can confirm that, I have just survived an assassination attempt and now I’m at Big Bend Police Station,” said the lawyer.
A questionnaire was sent to Superintendent Phindile Vilakati, however, she had not responded at the time of compiling this report.
Eswatini is in the midst of a political crisis after King Mswati unleashed his soldiers to shoot and kill dozens of civilians, the security officers are now targeting human rights defenders, lawyers, independent journalists and political activists.
At the time of compiling this report, police were pictured inspecting the crime scene where the lawyer survived the assassination attempt.
Lawyer Maxwell Nkambule is representing Simanga Sigwili Vilakati, Thandokuhle Dlamini, Ncamiso Mabuyakhulu, Philani Sihlongonyane and other freedom fighters who were charged in the midst of the political unrest.
