MALAWI ELECTIONS WERE FREE AND FAIR – MASUKU

Africa-Press – Eswatini. The presidential and parliamentary elections held in Malawi on Tuesday, September 15, 2025, have been declared free and fair by the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Electoral Observer Mission (SEOM).

Head of the mission, former Eswatini Deputy Prime Minister Themba Masuku, delivered the preliminary statement during a press briefing with the media in Malawi. Masuku, who was appointed by His Majesty King Mswati III to lead the delegation, confirmed that the elections met SADC’s standards for credibility and transparency.

“The elections were free and fair, which is in line with what SADC wants to see during polls in the region,” Masuku said.

However, the SEOM head noted that the mission observed isolated incidents of skirmishes in some areas during voting. He further highlighted concerns raised over the manner in which police handled certain situations. Despite these issues, the mission concluded that the irregularities did not compromise the overall integrity of the elections.

Masuku commended Malawi’s Electoral Commission for ensuring that citizens on duty were able to exercise their democratic right through special voting arrangements.

He urged Malawians to remain calm and to use legal and constitutional channels if they wished to challenge or raise grievances regarding the electoral process.

The SADC mission will present its full and final report to the Malawian authorities, the SADC Secretariat, and regional leaders in due course.
