Africa-Press – Eswatini. Education and Training Minister Lady Howard Mabuza has confirmed that the 2022 academic year will be compressed with the view to revert to normal school days in January 2023.
When releasing the revised school calendar for 2021/2022, the minister stated that they would be a five day mid-term break in the 2022 academic year.
With schools having opened for the third team on January 11th, 2022 will close on March 25.
The minister announced that the new school calendar year for 2022 would then resume after five days and open on April 5.
According to the minister, the academic year will comprise of two terms and the compressed curriculum will be used to cover all teaching and learning.
Upon commencement schools are expected to have a five day mid-term break from June 23 to 27. Classes will resume on June 28 ending the first term on August 19.
The second term will be expected to commence on September 7 and end on December 22.
She further stated that in 2023 school days would be back to normal with instructional times categorised into the usual three terms.
Currently the third term of the 2021 academic calendar is ongoing having commenced on January 11 and expected to end on March 25.
The minister has further urged parents and pupils to take note of the official closing dates for the 2021 and 2022 academic calendars which are March 25 and December 22 respectively.
She further clarified that the closure in March would not affect the Form 5 classes which would be continuing with their external examinations until March 31.
The marking of external examinations and the publicising of results for the academic year 2021 will be completed by the end of March for JC and EPC. Meanwhile, examinations for non-completing classes will be conducted by schools internally.
As a result of the pandemic and the unrest last year, the country’s academic calendar was disrupted.
The country witnessed an inconsistency in the opening and closure of schools due to the aforementioned circumstances which included the burning down of schools among other things.
On December 2021 the ministry announced the closure of schools without having completed the 2021 academic year which normally comprises of three terms.
The ministry said this was in preparation of the holidays for pupils. Classes resumed lessons on January 11.

Term 3:
Commencement of Term 3: January 11
End of Term 3 and Academic Year 2021: March 25
Academic Year 2022
This academic year will comprise two terms and the compressed curriculum will be used to cover eaching and learning.
Term 1:
Commences 2022: April 5
Mid-term Break: June 23-27
Resumption of Classes: June 28
End of Term 1: August 19
Term 2:
Term 2 Starts: September 7
Mid-term Break: October 27-31
Resumption of Classes: November 1
End of Academic Year 2022: December 22
