Africa-Press – Eswatini. The Ministry of Information, Communications and Technology (ICT), through its Department of Research, Science, Technology and Innovation (RSTI), engaged learners at the Mpaka High School Career Expo, highlighting the critical role of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in shaping future careers and driving national development.

The event, held at Mpaka High School, brought together students, educators, and stakeholders, with the Ministry using the platform to inspire and guide young people toward innovation-driven opportunities.

The Ministry’s RSTI team interacted directly with learners during the expo, highlighting how STEM contributes to economic growth, technological advancement, and national development. Officials explained that countries investing in STEM education are better positioned to compete globally, while also addressing local challenges through innovation and research-driven solutions.

During the engagement, learners were introduced to diverse STEM career pathways, including artificial intelligence, data science, and renewable energy, while also receiving guidance on academic requirements, scholarships, and essential skills needed to succeed. The Ministry further addressed the “how” by encouraging practical learning, curiosity, and early exposure to science and technology as critical steps toward building future-ready professionals.

A key highlight of the session was the strong call to action for young girls to pursue careers in science and technology. The RSTI team emphasised that gender should not be a barrier, noting that women currently make up less than 30 percent of the global STEM workforce, and their increased participation is vital for inclusive innovation.

Learners actively engaged in discussions, posing questions and sharing aspirations, while teachers and organisers praised the initiative as a vital bridge between education and industry. The interaction reflected a growing interest among young people in STEM fields, aligning with global projections that STEM-related jobs will grow by more than 10 percent over the next decade.

The Ministry’s participation supports Eswatini’s vision of building a knowledge-based economy and equipping youth with 21st-century skills. Through continued outreach programmes like the Mpaka High School Career Expo, ICT aims to nurture a generation capable of driving innovation and contributing meaningfully to national development.
