Africa-Press – Eswatini. The Eswatini Environment Authority (EEA) has been lauded for its role in fostering a culture of environmental responsibility among Emaswati.
During a sitting of the House of Assembly on April 26, 2025, Khubuta MP Masiphula Mamba praised the EEA’s efforts, particularly the popular Phatsa Sakho Nawe (Carry Your Own Bag) campaign. He noted that the initiative, which encourages the use of reusable bags, was instrumental in reducing plastic pollution — a move that even received commendation from His Majesty King Mswati III in his Parliament address earlier this year.
Mamba urged the EEA to build on this success by introducing more innovative campaigns. He suggested that the authority collaborate with other parastatals to develop initiatives that also empower young people to start eco-friendly businesses, especially those that creatively repurpose waste materials like plastic.
Among the recommendations Mamba presented was a proposed ban on the importation of plastic bags. The aim is to promote local recycling and stimulate green entrepreneurship. He also called for a portion of the revenue generated from plastic production to be reinvested into environmental protection programmes.
In a noteworthy point, Mamba highlighted the need to apply levies not only to traditional plastic bags but also to so-called “eco-friendly” bags, many of which still contain plastic components.
Through these recommendations, Parliament is signaling strong support for sustainable living and encouraging citizens to be active participants in protecting Eswatini’s natural beauty.
