Africa-Press – Eswatini. Deputy Prime Minister, Themba Masuku, said elections were meant to bring development.
Masuku advised the Ka-Ngcamphalala community to always elect a person who would serve truthfully.
He said the civil unrest was unnecessary and was not meant to happen.
“However, the people who claimed and called for democracy started it forgetting that they were in Parliament as a result of democracy.
One wonders what or who placed them in Parliament if not democracy; they did not understand what democracy is. No one explained that burning of schools, clinics, tinkhundla centres, homes, businesses and properties didn’t mean that they would be granted what they demanded,” he said.
Adding, he noted that the destruction of properties affected all children and highlighted that the damage amounted to millions and this included 49 schools that needed E19 million to rehabilitate, 19 tinkhundla centres were burnt and needed E45 million to rehabilitate them.
He said this happened at a time when government implemented decentralisation of services.
He quoted Exodus 18 verses 17-21, which describes the character of people who should be elected into leadership positions.
“You elect people so that they pass laws that will protect people. These include sexual and domestic offences, children protection and welfare and more.
What has brought negative change is that the people who were voted into Parliament then turn against their mandate and started implementing what they were not sent to do,” said Masuku.
He told the community that it was important to choose right and smart people who had their interest and would not divert from the mandate given to them.
“Do not allow people from other tinkhundla to come and spoil your democratic rights. Register, validate the voter’s roll and go vote so that the youth as the future generation of the country has a bright legacy,” he said.
Masuku further educated on the role his office played as DPM and his office according to the Constitution.
He said at times the DPM acts as prime minister when the PM isn’t available and should the incumbent PM pass on, the deputy premier steps into the position.
