Africa-Press – Eswatini. The National Cooperative Federation of Eswatini (NCFE) has announced that they will be hosting the 2022 cooperative day on July 7 at the Metropolitan Church in Manzini.
This was announced at the CODEC offices in Ezulwini in the presence of Commissioner of the Cooperatives in the ministry of Commerce Industry and Trade Nonhlanhla Mnisi.
The President of NCFE Musa Sibandze said the event was a platform to celebrate, grow the cooperative movement in the country, network and learn from fellow cooperatives.
“The theme for this year is co-operatives build a better world,” he said.
He mentioned that the world would be celebrating the year 2022 Coop-eratives Day, which was an event done for the promotion of cooperatives, the cooperative ideology and the positive impact cooperatives had on members’ lives as they were pillars of national economic and social development.
He also stated that the aim of the celebration was to increase awareness about cooperatives by highlighting how Eswatini shared similar goals and objectives as the international cooperative movement.
“This day aims to acknowledge the contributions of cooperatives to resolve some of the major national and international issues,” he said.
He said it also aimed to strengthen and extend partnerships between the international cooperative movement and other outfits of social development.
“The nation is invited to this event to learn more about cooperatives and the positive impact they bring to Eswatini’s economy,” he said. Sibandze further added that in a number of ways, it was clear that cooperatives play an important role in the economic and social development Eswatini.
“With regard to economic and social development, cooperatives promote the fullest participation of all people inclusion,” he said. Sibandze mentioned that in today’s era where many people felt powerless to change their lives, cooperatives represented a strong, vibrant and a viable economic alternative.
He said cooperatives were formed to meet peoples’ mutual needs and they were based on the powerful idea that together, a group of people could achieve goals that none of them could.
“Cooperatives are important tools for improving the living and working conditions of both women and men,” he said.
Profitability
He further stated that cooperatives made decisions that balanced, the need for profitability with the welfare of their members and the community which they served.
He explained that as cooperatives, foster economies of scope and scale, they increased the bargaining power of their members providing them, among others benefits, higher income and social protection.
“Hence, cooperatives give their members opportunities, protection and empowerment which are essential elements in uplifting them from degradation and poverty,” he said.
