Africa-Press – Eswatini. A new footbridge valued at E2.5 million has been officially handed over to the Luhhwahhweni community, marking a major step forward in improving local safety and accessibility.
The bridge, constructed by Plumbcare Construction, was delivered through a partnership between the Eswatini Microprojects Programme and Engineers in Action, and was officially inaugurated on 6 November 2025.
Before the bridge’s construction, residents faced serious safety risks during heavy rains, when river crossings became treacherous and communities were often cut off. Jabulani Mamba, Indluna yeNkhundla of Lugongolweni, described the project as long overdue and vital for the well-being of the community.
“Residents were often unable to cross during floods, which put their lives at risk,” Mamba said. “The new footbridge will not only enhance safety but also foster greater connectivity among our people.”
The initiative reflects a strong collaboration between development partners focused on improving rural infrastructure. Sibusiso Gamedze, Foreman at Plumbcare Construction, commended the team’s dedication and the collective effort invested in ensuring the bridge’s quality and resilience.
“This footbridge represents more than just a structure; it symbolises our commitment to enhancing the quality of life for the people of Luhhwahhweni,” Gamedze remarked.
The newly completed bridge is expected to significantly improve access to schools, healthcare facilities, and markets, especially during the rainy season when mobility has historically been limited.
For the people of Luhhwahhweni, the bridge stands as a tangible symbol of progress — a safe passage that connects families, communities, and opportunities.
Through projects like this, the Eswatini Microprojects Programme continues to demonstrate its dedication to strengthening community resilience and addressing critical infrastructural challenges faced by rural populations across the Kingdom.
