Africa-Press – Eswatini. Newmont Corporation’s Africa business unit has introduced the Cat® R2900 XE hybrid loader at its Subika Underground mine in Ahafo South, marking the first use of such technology in Africa.

This deployment signifies a pivotal step in Newmont’s drive to diminish its global environmental impact, demonstrating our unwavering commitment to achieving zero carbon emissions by 2050.

As part of its commitment to environmental sustainability, Newmont Corporation plans to transition to the R2900 XE loaders. By 2026, the company aims to replace its existing fleet at the Subika Underground mine with nine of these advanced loaders.

This transition is expected to deliver a 31% improvement in fuel efficiency, reduce underground heat generation, curb emissions, and enhance the overall working environment. These benefits underscore the positive impact of Newmont’s environmental initiatives, as highlighted by Dave Thornton, managing director of Newmont’s Africa business unit.

In a strategic partnership initiated in 2021, Newmont and Caterpillar Inc. have committed $100 million to advance comprehensive mining systems. These systems will integrate autonomous haulage fleets and other cutting-edge technologies across both open pit and underground operations.

The introduction of the CAT R2900 XE loader in Ghana is a tangible result of this collaborative effort, demonstrating the industry’s collective commitment to accelerating carbon emission reduction within the mining sector.

Newmont Corporation, a global leader in gold production and a producer of copper, silver, zinc, and lead, operates a distinguished portfolio spanning North America, South America, Australia, and Africa.

Listed on the S&P 500 Index, Newmont is renowned for its steadfast commitment to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles, pioneering sustainable mining practices since its establishment in 1921, a legacy we are proud to uphold.
