Africa-Press – Eswatini. The financial crisis within the University of Eswatini(UNESWA) cannot be attributed to poor administration by Administrators of the institution of higher learning, it is the government that must account why such a very critical institution that produces qualified human resources for industries is pushed to the political donga.
Delaying the payment of salaries for staff is an indication that the crisis is deeper that we can imagine but at least, we are aware that the solution is upon government, public funds must be released to bailout the institution of higher learning.King Mswati as the Chancellor of the University must account and explain why his government is destroying the institution, how can the country celebrate the 55-55 King’s Birthday and Independence Day Double Celebration, only for Lecturers to complain about their delayed salaries a few weeks later.A Commission of Inquiry must be established to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crisis within the University but, in the meantime, government must release monies to sustain the institution. The University must start now to prepare for October 2023 salaries, we don’t want to hear same stories suggesting that, Lecturers did not receive their monthly salaries. It is clear that we don’t have leadership in this country, no sane Head of State or government can destroy a University while claiming to be working towards achieving the United Nations(UN) Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs).As journalists, we cannot selectively blame the Vice Chancellor, Registrar of the Board, the problem is far above the jurisdiction of the UNESWA Administration. This government that strives by diluting and undermining the quality of education to induce political submission and/or loyalty is responsible for the crisis.
