Africa-Press – Eswatini. Communities in the Hhohho North-West region are set to benefit from improved public health services following the restoration of mortuary services at Pigg’s Peak Government Hospital.
The Ministry of Health announced that the hospital will officially resume offering mortuary services from Monday, 22 June 2026, after the completion of renovation works aimed at upgrading the facility and improving service delivery.
According to a public notice issued by the ministry, mortuary services at the hospital had been suspended after the old mortuary was condemned following an assessment. The closure meant that families in Pigg’s Peak and surrounding communities had to seek alternative arrangements, often relying on private mortuary service providers while awaiting the construction and upgrading of the facility.
The reopening marks an important milestone in the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and ensure that essential services are accessible to all emaSwati, regardless of where they live.
One of the key improvements is the installation of a new mortuary refrigeration system with a capacity of 21 shelves. The ministry described the new equipment as a significant improvement over the previous facility, allowing the hospital to provide a more efficient and reliable service to the public.
The restoration of the mortuary is expected to bring considerable relief to families in the region. Instead of travelling long distances or incurring additional costs associated with private facilities, residents will once again have access to a local public service designed to meet their needs during difficult times.
Beyond convenience, the upgraded mortuary is also expected to help ensure that deceased persons are cared for in a dignified and respectful environment while families make funeral arrangements.
