“This day aims to acknowledge the contributions of cooperatives to resolve some of the major national and international issues. This day also aims to strengthen and extend partnerships between the international cooperative movement and other outfits of social development”, Mnisi elaborated.
The world will be celebrating the 2022 International Cooperatives Day, an event done for the promotion of cooperatives, the cooperative ideology and the positive impact cooperatives have on members’ lives as they are pillars of national economic and social development.
In an era where many people feel powerless to change their lives, cooperatives represent a strong, vibrant, and viable economic alternative. “Cooperatives are formed to meet peoples’ mutual needs as they are based on the powerful idea that together, a group of people can achieve goals that none of them could achieve alone”, Mnisi said.
Furthermore, the Commissioner said cooperatives are an integral tool for improving the living and working conditions of both women and men as they make decisions that balance the need for profitability with the welfare of their members and the community which they serve.
Many members of cooperatives have managed to improve their livelihoods through participating in the cooperative business which continues to further benefit their families. “As cooperatives foster economies of scope and scale, they increase the bargaining power of their members providing them, among others benefits, higher income and social protection”, she added.
Cooperatives business present a rare opportunity for members to grow their business as a unit and be empowered to protect their interests and supporting each other as they fight against degradation and the elements of poverty in the society they are operating in.
In a number of ways, it is clear that cooperatives play an important role in the economic and social developmentof Eswatini and they also contribute to the poverty eradication initiatives by various entities in the country. With regard to economic and social development, cooperatives promote the fullest participation of all people “INCLUSION”. They contribute to sustainable human development to many Emaswati who are members, employees and customers of all cooperatives in Eswatini.
