Africa-Press – Eswatini. Mbabane Highlanders midfielder Banele ‘Pupu’ Sikhondze has committed to another season with the capital city giants by signing a one-year contract extension.
This decision follows the expiration of his previous contract at the end of the season and comes amid reports that Sikhondze had been training with other Premier League clubs interested in securing his signature.
His renewal is a significant boost for Highlanders as they prepare for the upcoming season with Inkunzi Emnyama still dealing with the exits of some of their former senior players whose contracts had expired.
These include former goalkeeper Khanyakwezwe Shabalala and midfielder Emmanuel Ansah who went to Nsingizini Hotspurs and Mbabane Swallows respectively.
The former Polokwane City player was a free agent having signed a one-year deal with the black and white side which expired last month after joining the team at the beginning of last season from cross town rival Mbabane Swallows.
According to impeccable sources within the Bull’s kraal, Sikhondze has penned another one-year deal and is set to be part of team’s pre-season training which is set to kick-off tomorrow.
“It’s a done deal. He has renewed the contract and the team’s management is engaging some of the players whose contracts elapsed at the end of June,” said the source. Sikhondze is the second player to commit his future to the club after youngster Swakhile Shongwe a few weeks ago.
Highlanders Public Relations Officer (PRO) Kenneth Dlamini initially said he could not comment on the matter as he still needed to get all information on news of the player’s signing.
He opted to answer the questions later, but was unable to be reached as his phone rang un-answered for the better part of yesterday.
Mbabane Highlanders are not out of the woods yet, as they still have eight senior players who are without any contract, which makes them eligible to sign for any team of their choice. The players include skipper Philani Mkhonto, Vusi Vilakati, Menzi Sithole and Delisa Gama.
