Africa-Press – Eswatini. Southern African leaders have reaffirmed their collective commitment to stability and peace on the continent during the Extraordinary Summit of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Organ Troika, held virtually on Thursday.

The high-level meeting focused on Madagascar’s political and social developments, with leaders pledging coordinated action to support the nation’s return to peace and democratic governance.

The summit was chaired by His Excellency Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, President of the Republic of Malawi, in his capacity as Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence, and Security Cooperation. Eswatini was represented by Honourable Senator Pholile Shakantu, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, alongside counterparts from Tanzania and Malawi.

Strong Regional Commitment to Peace

The summit delivered a powerful message of unity, calling on all Malagasy stakeholders to embrace inclusive dialogue as the primary mechanism for resolving the ongoing crisis. Leaders urged all parties to refrain from violence and prioritise the protection of vulnerable groups, including youth, women, the elderly, and people with disabilities.

“The urgency of restoring calm and promoting a conducive environment for constructive engagement cannot be overstated,” the communiqué read.

SADC has positioned itself as a ready and willing partner to mediate the situation through diplomatic channels.

Action-Oriented Measures

Key resolutions include the deployment of a Technical Mission to Madagascar by October 22, 2025. The mission will conduct a fact-finding exercise and report its findings by October 31, paving the way for a follow-up Extraordinary Summit to deliberate on the situation further.

SADC also instructed its Secretariat to collaborate with strategic international partners, the African Union, United Nations, and Indian Ocean Commission, to ensure coordinated and complementary interventions in Madagascar.

Eswatini’s Positive Presence

Eswatini’s participation underscores the Kingdom’s ongoing role in regional diplomacy and peace-building. Senator Shakantu’s presence at the summit reflects Eswatini’s commitment to continental solidarity and support for democratic stability within SADC.

Celebrating Leadership

Leaders congratulated Prof. Mutharika on his election as President of Malawi and his assumption of the SADC Organ Troika chairmanship. They also expressed appreciation for his decisive leadership in convening the Extraordinary Summit.

“The Chairperson extended gratitude to the Organ Troika Heads of State and Government for their participation and continued commitment to promoting stability, peace, and security in the Region, and the Republic of Madagascar in particular,” the statement concluded.
