Africa-Press – Eswatini. National team Sihlangu and Young Buffaloes skipper Lindo Mkhonta is on the verge of securing a lucrative deal at top Zambian outfit Zesco United.
The veteran right-back arrived in Zambia this past Monday ahead of his assessment, which started yesterday. This follows an invitation extended through his team, Young Buffaloes, about a week ago. It was reliably gathered that the club which is wholly owned and sponsored by the state-owned electricity company, ZESCO Limited, had been monitoring the 30-year-old for quite some time and felt it was high time they invited him for assessment in a bid to tie him down to the former Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League semi-finalists. Buffaloes Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Sandile Gwebu confirmed the interest, but assured the team’s loyalists that the player would be back in the country in time for this weekend’s clash. The army side face Manzini Sea Birds on Saturday.

“He will be there (Zambia) until Thursday (tomorrow). He will be available for the weekend and we wish him all the best,” Gwebu said briefly. Zesco spokesperson Henry Kapata, on the other hand, was yet to reply to a WhatsApp text sent to him at the time of compiling this report late yesterday. If Mkhonta completes the move, he would become the second local player to join Zesco. Back in 2018, Nigerian striker Quadri Aladeon Kola, who was formerly with Manzini Wanderers and Mbabane Swallows, completed a switch to the Ndola-based outfit and was reportedly getting a E60 000 monthly salary. Worth mentioning is that the player can be forced to take an unpaid leave at work if he signs for Zesco. He is a soldier by profession.
The club is not only professional but boasts a rich history. They became the first Zambian club to qualify for the CAF African Champions League Group stage in 2009. ZESCO United also became the first Zambian Club this century to play against European opposition when they crossed swords with Zenit Saint Petersburg from Russia in Abu Dhabi in 2008. They reached their first-ever semi-finals of the CAF African Champions League after a 2–2 draw away to Egyptian league champions Al Ahly several years ago. They extended their all-time unbeaten home record against non-Zambian teams to 26 games on Saturday, September 17, 2016, after a 2–1 home win against South African league champions Mamelodi Sundowns FC in the CAF African Champions League.
The club’s home ground is the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium with a seating capacity of 49 800 in Ndola. The Levy Mwanawasa stadium has been its home ground since 2012. The club turned professional and joined the top division in 2003. Since their formation, the club is synonymous with fame and glory, both domestically and at continental level.
