Africa-Press – Eswatini. Some parliamentarians have accused neighbouring countries of not assisting Eswatini in the extradition process of local fugitives, who are roaming their countries.

Senator Chief Prince Mphatfwa raised concerns about the correlation between outgoing extradition cases and incoming requests. The senator alleged that it looked as if Eswatini was assisting other countries to catch their fugitives of the law who were hiding in Eswatini while the same assistance was not received by Eswatini from these countries. This was when the annual performance report and budget debate of the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs by the Senate Portfolio Committee.

The annual report indicated that the country has 28 extradition requests coming from outside of the country of which 26 of them were brought forward from the previous reporting period with only two new requests. The report showed that only two extraditions were actioned by other countries on behalf of Eswatini. Senators noted that many people were fugitives of the law who were walking freely in neighbouring countries in particular but were not arrested by their law enforcers. The senators asked the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs what was being done by the country to ensure that the fugitives who were hiding in other countries were extradited and brought back to the country to face the full wrath of the law. In response, the ministry explained that the country has done a lot regarding the extradition of fugitives from outside. The ministry explained that South Africa surrendered two fugitives. The ministry added that other fugitives were still at large and were being sought.
