Africa-Press – Eswatini. ESA has announced a strong squad to represent the country at the upcoming 16thAfrica Aquatics African Championships.
Angola will host the Absolute African Swimming and Open Water Championships from April 30 to May 4, 2024 at the Alvalade Swimming Pool and on Mussulo Island in Luanda Province. Representing the country will be the impressive trio of Damien De Sousa, Simanga Dlamini and Simphiwe Dlamini. Simanga Dlamini recently participated in the African Games held in Accra, Ghana.
The team’s selection was announced by Secretary General (SG) of the Eswatini Swimming Association, Nozipho Mahlalela, who expressed optimism about the upcoming Championships. “As an association, we are proud and excited about the selected athletes, believing that they will represent the country with honour at the African Swimming and Open Water Championships. We have faith that our chosen athletes will do their utmost best to bring home medals. Furthermore, we are confident that having an experienced coach like Welcome accompanying them will provide the necessary motivation and boost to their confidence,” she said.

Angola will be the ninth country to host the African Swimming and Open Water Championships, which began in 1974 in Cairo, Egypt. Egypt also hosted the event in 1982 and 2002. Other countries that have hosted the competition include Tunisia (1997, 1990, and 2022), Kenya (1998 and 2012), Morocco (2004 and 2010), South Africa (2008 and 2016), Senegal (2006), Algeria (2018), and Ghana (2021). The 2020 event scheduled for South Africa was cancelled due to COVID-19.
South Africa is the most successful country in the African Swimming and Open Water Championships, having won seven titles. They emerged as champions in the last edition of the event held in Tunis, Tunisia.
