Africa-Press – Eswatini. The Embassy of the United States(US) in the Kingdom of eSwatini held a meeting with Tanele Maseko, the wife to assassinated human rights lawyer Thulani Maseko on Tuesday.
This comes after the police harassed the widow while claiming to be investigating the circumstances surrounding her husband’s death, Tanele Maseko and late lawyers children were detained and harassed at the Oshoek boarder last week and the harassment continued at the Manzini Regional Police Headquarters.
In an online statement released on Tuesday, the US Embassy expressed solidarity with the widow and urged the police to abide by the rule of law during the course of the investigations.
“Today we had a chance to speak with Tanele Maseko, widow of slain human rights activist Thulani Maseko, and Mary Pais da Silva, one of the prominent human rights lawyers representing her, to better understand Mrs. Maseko’s detention last week and her ongoing interactions with Royal Eswatini Police Service. We stand in support of Tanele Maseko and all defenders of human rights in Eswatini. We call on the Eswatini Government to pursue vigorously the investigation into Thulani’s death while also following its own due process in all aspects of the investigation, including treatment of witnesses. Upholding transparency and abiding by the rule of law is the only way to ensure accountability and attain meaningful justice”, reads the online statement.
Thulani Maseko, the then Chairperson of the pro-democracy MultiStakeholder Forum(MSF) was assassinated in his home after King Mswati threatened those calling for democracy saying his mercenaries will deal with them.
The human rights lawyer was corresponding with international organizations including the Southern African Development Community(SADC) facilitating a political dialogue as part of peaceful means to resolve the eSwatini political crisis.
