Africa-Press – Eswatini. One thing that most writers aspire to do is to give hope to anyone who reads what has been written. In a world that seems hell bent on transforming each day into a miniature version of the sorrow to be found in hell, it becomes our sole prerogative, as creative writers, to fiercely combat those negative forces and deliver passages that will foster peace and love.

Sometimes we are able to achieve this goal, but at other times we do not. We are sometimes overwhelmed by the abundance of sin and deceit that we crumble and take to the pen to vent our frustrations at being assigned this onerous task of uplifting spirits in a world where everything else is designed to lower the cognitive value of individuals so that they seek material possessions in a futile bid to boost their perceived shortcomings in self-value. So we seek divine intervention.

Before we write we call upon spirits of goodwill to guide the pen in our hands so that we write what is good for the soul. As I sat on my grass mat yesterday and pondered how best you, the reader, could be ushered into positivity by my letter, I had an epiphany. I had a vision. I closed my eyes and right before me words started to rise, in much the same way as they do after a movie.

Happiness

I have never been moved in such a way as I was by those words. So warm, calming and soothing to the soul. They said something about everything happening for a reason and that happiness will surely arrive in your heart as sure as the sun rises in the morning and flowers bloom in the springtime. What I saw told of life being like a journey and therefore after every uphill that you go through there should be a downhill on the other side.

The beauty of life lies essentially in contrast. How would one know something is white if one has not seen something black? How would you fathom the importance of always having a jacket handy in the winter time if you have never endured an hour or two of being exposed to the chilly air? How would you know the importance of voting for a sane politician who is pleased by serving the nation if you had not seen one who is greedy and self-serving?

As soon as the last sentence drifted up I opened my eyes and picked up my pen. The aim was to write a letter as I had seen exactly as it was, word for word, so that you could also be touched and fully realize the truth that there is no permanent situation. I wanted to touch the hearts of even those who have lost their loved ones and share with them the healing powers of the letter but alas, I couldn’t remember a single sentence.

It would be folly of me to just forget about such an article that clearly and vividly articulated my ambition as a writer, which is to string the vowels and consonants at my disposal to bring hope to the oppressed and uplift those who are burdened. Remember, you have only one life to live, so whether up and down, enjoy your ride while it lasts.
